Mitral Valve — ECG/EKG Terminology
Definition: Valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle; also called the bicuspid valve.
Key Facts
- Left atrioventricular valve with two leaflets (anterior and posterior).
- Opens in diastole for LV filling and closes in systole to prevent backflow to LA.
- Mitral disease can cause atrial enlargement and pulmonary congestion.
ECG Connection: Mitral pathology may be associated with atrial fibrillation and P-wave abnormalities.
Why It Matters: A new irregular rhythm in structural valve disease may represent clinically significant decompensation.
